Were any special postmark cancel(s) available for the STS-125 shuttle servicing mission? |

I've seen mention of one. It is still available. Please see page 55 of the USPS 'Postal Bulletin' May 21 2009 Edition. |

It was not the weather, it was a conspiracy: when space shuttle Atlantis landed at Edwards on May 24th, the post office there already had a pictorial postmarker ready for use. They could not have done that without prior knowledge of the fact, could they? ------------------ Jürgen P Esders Berlin, Germany International Director (Europe), Space Unit Vice President, Weltraum Philatelie e. Hmmm... that does look suspicious. Thanks to both of you for the info. |

There were two designs submitted in late May for the latest shuttle landing on the West Coast, in addition, there is another pictorial device currently in use for today's June 8th 50th anniv. of the first X-15 flight test from Edwards AFB, CA. Similar designs are also in use at Houston, TX, for STS-125/HST mission highlights (docking to the ISS, spacewalks, etc.). I'll have samples of each in a few days if anyone is interested in seeing them. |

I'm guessing that Edwards has these "in the can" just to accommodate us weird collectors. What a better thing to do than have them ready to go up front, "just in case"... even with these days of the USPS being "broke".Now if they had had something ready in Dallas on November 22, 1963, then you could say "Hmmmmm". |

Remember - these are NOT provided (paid for) by the USPS but by collectors and/or other interested people/groups.Maybe this is a generic one with a changeable mission number? |

Ken - Were the pictorial cancels used in Houston available to collectors? I do not recall seeing anything on their availability. The only one I got was the cancel used for launch. Availability was announced after the fact. ------------------ John Macco Space Unit#1457 |

Actually, this time USPS is not to blame. The cancel at Houston had already been announced for the first launch opportunity, months before the actual flight took place. Of course, at the time, no one bothered as the launch had just been postponed when the communication was made.German space dealer Carsten Fuchs also communicates that there had initially been a very minuscule version of the cancel - product of a misunderstanding between the post office and the company that produced the device. Later, a "normally sized" version was produced to replace the very small thingy. |
