I have several hundred covers with the "First Lunar Landing - 5th Anniversary Jul 20 '74" special cancel but the postmark is June 20, 1974 in various cities.
What's the significance of June 20 rather than July 20? Was that the first day of use of the special cancel?

June 20 was the first day of use of the slogan cancellation which said: "First/Lunar Landing/5th Anniversary JUL. 20 '74." Here is a cover cancelled on the 5th anniversary of Apollo 11 moon landing.
