'Meatball' milestone: NASA's original logo still soars after 65 years

One of the world's best known — and certainly most-traveled — logos is 65 years old.

Since its announcement on July 15, 1959, the insignia representing NASA, or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has adorned both t-shirts and spacesuits, been reproduced as large as 10 stories tall and reached the surfaces of both the moon and Mars. The red, white and blue logo is NASA's oldest official identifier, even predating the agency's formal seal.

Maybe we can use this topic to share some of our favorite "meatballs" from our collections. To begin, here are two of mine.

The back of this NASA insignia lapel pin is inscribed, "Flown in space with Scott Kelly, 2015-2016," testifying to its flight aboard the International Space Station for Kelly's yearlong mission.

An example of the first Lego minifigure to include the NASA insignia. It was also the first-ever Lego figure to display a logo that the toy company did not design.

All times are CT (US)
