A pair of Balfour cufflinks and matching tietack were given to me by a dear friend. They were given to his father in the early 60s by John Glenn. His father knew John Glenn through business. They were given (only a few pair), to the men/women who had part or helped with the design/building of the Mercury Friendship 7... after the flight. I have looked all over and can only find the cufflinks in the Ohio State University John Glenn Archives/Artifacts section. Specifically Jewelry, item num N0245.
I have called the man in charge of the display and he knows nothing else besides they came in a box from John Glenn himself. I do know they were given as a three piece set.
There is a collector who is doing his best to help me by forwarding my pics to people he knows, because he too said, he has heard of these, and believes they were flown.
I have also called Balfour (L.G. Balfour) and they do not have any records from the 1960s.
Any advice? Just trying to find out more to the story, how many pair were made, and in fact if they were flown. Was thinking of writing Senator Glenn himself. Thanks for reading and any help. — Theresa
