T O P I C R E V I E WNavySpaceFanI have a STS-41G patch (AB, bought in 1992) with a Payload Specialist tab that is way off center. Do I have something special (like a misprinted postage stamp) or just a goofed up patch?embangloyI have an STS-41G where the payload specialist tab is sewn (roughly) in the 7:00 position.NavySpaceFanThe center of mine (the S in Scully) is sewn at about the 5'oclock position. Sounds like a common error.spaced outI know you sometimes see error patches listed on eBay like they're valuable rarities but I don't believe it's the case.Errors in stamp production are very rare due to the nature of the process and those that actually make it out into the public domain without being recognised and destroyed are even rarer, which I imagine is why such stamps are highly collectible and valuable.Embroidered patches are quite different and errors probably occur frequently. Error patches have no face value (unlike stamps and currency) so they can be discarded without care. I just dont see any reason why they should have any real value apart from as 'hey would you look at that!' items.bengutteryThere are lots of patches out there that should not ever have left the factory. Some are incomplete and may not have all their stitching or their borders completed. When I get these in a lot, I trash them unless it is something quite unique which it never has been.NavySpaceFanBased on the responses so far, it looks like I just have a goofed up patch.GonzoThis is too bad. I have two that have obvious errors. One is a 51B. It's supposed to have a tab with Vandenberg and Wang. It has no tab. And it's not that the tab was removed. There's no holes or any indication that the tab was ever even there. The back is the sealed plastic like they should be, but there's no holes where the thread/needle would have been if had been attached. The other is 41G. It not only doesn't have the Garneau/Scully/Power tab (again, no indication that it was ever there), but for the 3 plumes going up to the star in the middle, only the center plume was embroidered in. The two outside plumes only have the black outline of where the gold thread should be.SparkR_13If those of you do not wish to keep these manufacturing errors, feel free to send my way. It's not like I am seeking them out, but they are something to place next to a good one to show an error. GonzoWhile I'll admit I may have resurrected an old thread, from the responses it has received, it doesn't appear that "error" patches are that common. OK, maybe small errors crop up from time to time, but those with obvious errors I agree shouldn't have been allowed to leave the factory. But a few have. So wouldn't these have some value given time? I agree that they won't ever have value like stamps or currency might, but worthless? If for no other reason they have interest due to those errors. I for one will keep mine. And like SparkR just said, if you think they're worthless, I'll take them. I'll even pay postage if you want. Just send me an email. Like I said, if for no other reason, I think they're interesting!dogcrew5369I have the 41G and 51G patches where the tabs are off center or not sewn on properly. I always thought it was just sorry workmanship. I'll trade anyone for a centered patch!
