T O P I C R E V I E WMBThe full scale Orion spacecraft service module that some space memorabilia show visitors saw at NASA Glenn last summer has been "weatherized" and is now on display next to our administration building. This particular mock-up was created before they reduced the diameter from 5.5 meters to 5 meters. This mockup is available for the public to view and includes a podium which provides a description of the elements of the Orion spacecraft. I have enclosed a couple of pictures taken by one of our volunteers of the mock-up. collocationPlease forgive my ignorance, where is GRCThank youRobert PearlmanGlenn Research Center is in Cleveland, Ohio.SpaceDustLooking at these photos here and the photos in the thread posted by Robert, "Photo's: Orion at JSC", the service module is so different from each other. Just what is it going to look like? Here the Quad thrusters are forward of the service module with one forward nozzle, two aft, two for roll in one direction and one in the other. In Robert's photos the quad is more aft, with two thrusters forward, two aft, and two for roll in each direction. Also the service module is longer in these photos than in Robert's. Again, just what is this thing going to actually look like or has it not been nailed down yet?Robert PearlmanAs Michael mentions in his post to start this thread, the service module depicted by GRC's full-scale, cross-section is the 5.5 meter version — the SM and for that matter, Orion, has been scaled down since to 5 meters in diameter. The service module was further redesigned to reduce weight. That said, the service module depicted by the JSC Orion model, while more accurate, is not exact. capcom9I believe it is far too early in the game to ascertain what the final design for the spacecraft will be. We could be looking at thousands of engineering changes still to be determined over the upcoming years. Incidentally, I was at KSC last week, and didn't see a damned thing regarding Project Orion. Nothing! One would think that NASA should be promoting this project to the public with the greatest of effort, but sadly no mention is to be found at KSC.
