T O P I C R E V I E WRobert PearlmanISS Expedition 22 insigniaExpedition 22 will be the 22nd long duration mission on-board the International Space Station (ISS). Expedition 22 begins with the Soyuz TMA-15 undocking in November 2009. Three new crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz TMA-17. NASA astronaut Jeffrey Williams, station commander Russian cosmonaut Maxim Suraev Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Soichi Noguchi and NASA astronaut T.J. Creamer, who will launch in December 2009 on Soyuz TMA-17 and return in May 2010 on the same vehicle The ISS Expedition 22 patch was designed by Tim Gagnon and Jorges Cartes.PowerCatThe expedition patch is now posted on the NASA website. The 22nd Expedition to the International Space Station is dedicated to the final stages of assembly and the transition to full utilization as an orbiting laboratory. The sun, providing power and life support to the space station, shines through one of the solar arrays as the ISS orbits above Earth. The oceans and atmosphere, providing life support to Earth, are shown in all their beauty. The moon hovers in the distance as the goal of the next era of exploration. The six stars illustrate the increased capability of the crew complement. In the border are the national flags of the crew members as well as their surnames in their native languages. Expedition XXII continues the effort to acquire the knowledge necessary to extend the reach of exploration from Earth, to the moon and beyond.KSCartistI saw this yesterday and it brightened up my morning. Next stop ISS.Sean CollinsHere is the Expedition 22 poster that I designed for Space Flight Awareness. ------------------Sean CollinsGraphics Technical LeadTessada & Associates, Inc.NASA/Johnson Space CenterHouston, TexasKevin T. RandallToday AB Emblem either newly listed or relisted the five crew names version of the Expedition 22 patch. (See the image at the top of this thread). Previously until today they only listed and sold the no names version of this patch (SKU patch design number 148241, which had 10 production runs to date), has now been discontinued and the remaining stocks transferred to the "Lost In Space" page. The original Expedition 22 patch with five crew names had SKU patch design number 147407 C and just two short production runs, 10/09 10 (crew batch), and 04/10 10 (spacepatches.nl batch). The "new" one (if it is new) has SKU 147406, (the six might be a typo error on the AB Emblem website) The date code is unknown at this time (if it is new)? It is listed on the "Expeditions & ISS" pages. I am not sure how many were listed but all sold out in less than 15 minutes? (They may have been a few from the 10/09 10 crew batch.)If any member here managed to buy one of those Expedition 22 (five crew names) patches, could they let us know what is on the embedded label? Many thanks.LiemboIt's almost as if they have them reversed in their catalog. The no name version is the common version, the 5-name version was a part of that run of patches around that era that also had named/un-named patches issued (the versions with names being the more limited versions). Jacques van OeneInteresting indeed, we (spacepatches.nl) asked AB to produce this patch for us, as they were not available at the time, and AB told us they would never become available. So we had 50 of each (10 different name patches) made exclusive for us... until now.Anyway, I have seven of the Expedition 22 name patches left, so if there is interest you can buy one from me for 10 Euro a piece plus 3 euro worldwide shipping.Kevin T. RandallSo far AB Emblem have discontinued four of the ISS Expedition no names patches, and moved any remaining stocks to the "Lost In Space" pages of their website, and replaced them with the named versions on the "Expeditions & ISS" pages. The no names patches are; ISS-15 SKU 129504 none found with date code embedded labels on.ISS-17 SKU 139543 just one production run with embedded labels on.ISS-22 SKU 148241 ten production runs with embedded labels on.ISS-24 SKU 156541 seven production runs with embedded labels on.The ten known production run date codes for the Expedition 22 no crew names patches are as follows;148241 C ---- 09/09 10 (Taiwan)148241-C ---- 09/09 20 (USA) (Part of crew batch)148241 C ---- 10/09 10 (Taiwan)148241-C ---- 10/09 20 (USA) (Part of crew batch)148241 C ---- 11/09 10 (Taiwan)148241 ---- 04/10 10 (Taiwan)148241 C ---- 07/10 10 (Taiwan)148241 ---- 10/10 40 (China)148241 C ---- 04/11 10 (Taiwan)148241. ---- 08/12 20 (USA)The three original (+ one extra**, + two new), known production run date codes for the Expedition 22 five crew names patches;147407 C ---- 10/09 10 (Taiwan) (crew issued batch, signed patches known)147407 C ---- 04/10 10 (Taiwan) (spacepatches.nl batch)147407 ---- 09/10/20 (USA) NASA batch (seen photo only on 23-06-19).**147407 C ---- 10/10/20 (USA)** (seen on eBay on 02-09-23)147406 A-B Emblem 05/19 55 (USA Sample batch) Confirmed.147406 A-B Emblem 5/19 20 (USA) newly listed on the AB Emblem website. A new date code found on 2nd September 2023, see list above.---- = No Country of manufacture shown on the embedded labels.Kevin T. RandallThe Expedition 22 patch with five crew names is now available to buy from the AB Emblem website. (Managed to buy a few this time).Update: Only about ten patches available which sold out within about 30 minutes.Kevin T. RandallAB Emblem have now listed for the third time on their website "Expedition & ISS" page 50+ "new" Expedition 22 five crew names patches last night. They were either waiting for a batch to arrive in from China, in which case they will have 04/1940 date code, or more likely they produced them in-house at Weaverville in which case they will have 05/19 20 date code.I have a feeling the two patches listed and sold on Monday 29th April were either two from the original October 2009 batch, or more likely two "new sample" patches with "55" date codes? The ten patches that were listed and possibly sold on Thursday 2nd May could of been listed too early, as my order was not fulfilled until late last night, at around the time the third listing was made?Paul J. BrennanI am new to patch collecting and have been reading these boards for the last several months. It's a great resource! All week I was trying to get my registration set up with so I could update the group on why AB Emblem decided to make the change for the Expedition 22 patch, so here goes - The week before last, I reached out to AB Emblem to clarify a question I had re: Expedition patches 21 and 22 with respect to the official vs. unofficial versions of those patches. Andrew of AB Emblem was quite helpful. He contacted NASA directly in Houston and received the following response: Exp. 21 patch made with no names. In those days we would do a version with no names prior to launch and one with names after they landed since we had a rotating astronaut and the uncertainty of some shuttle launches occurring on time we would opt to make expedition patches with no names to make sure the crew names we did put on there were accurate. The Exp. 22 patch graphic was made with no names and a small amount may have been made with no names, but the majority were made with names. Ultimately the crew decided to go with names on the final version for before and after launch. In short, the Expedition 22 patch with names is the official version, at least according to this individual at NASA whom Andrew communicated with. Hope that clears things up, but it may only spark more debate as to why things remained the way they did for years. Glad to finally be on board! Kevin T. RandallWelcome aboard cS Paul. This person at NASA JSC, Houston has got the Expedition 22 "no crew names" and "with crew names" patches around the wrong way. There were tens of thousands made in ten production runs between September 2009 and August 2012 of the "no names" patches (see list above), but probably only 50 made with the "crew names" on (originally produced in October 2009). Only the decals have the "five crew names" on only.Yes all the Expedition 21 patches have "no names" on them. (Again running into tens of thousands made in ten production runs between August 2009 and August 2013.) Only 50 were made with "crew names" on in a private commission by spacepatches.nl in April 2010. (Yes "unofficial" versions were produced but not by AB Emblem.)Paul J. BrennanThank you Kevin. I'm following you, but if this statement is true: "Ultimately the crew decided to go with names on the final version for before and after launch." Then there should be further investigation to determine the validity of the statement by the NASA person. Does anyone know which version was actually worn by the astronauts? That should settle it correct? It's possible that the person at NASA is wrong, but it's also possible that the decision to produce the "no names" version many years ago was also inaccurate. Kevin T. RandallI think both versions were worn by the astronauts and cosmonauts. The "no crew names" version at the beginning of Expedition 22, and the "five crew names" version towards the end of Expedition 22?LiemboOfficial ISS-22 crew portrait (sitting in front of the Soyuz trainer), pre-launch presser and as they are being suited up immediately before the mission show them wearing the no-name version. Photos of the crew also show them on station wearing the no-name version on their jumpsuits and post-flight recovery flight suits (disembarking flight from Kazakhstan). I can't find any photo of the crew with the name version on their apparel. Kevin T. RandallMany thanks for that clarification Liem, I wasn't sure.Paul J. BrennanThank you Liem. Kevin T. RandallToday I received my order for the "new" Expedition 22 patches with five crew names on them. The SKU patch design number is 147406 and not 147407 like on the previous two production runs in 2009 and 2010. The date code on the ones I received are all 05/19 55 (sample batch). The production run date code is 5/19 20. (Now confirmed).
