T O P I C R E V I E WcapoetcWhen I lived in the Atlanta, Georgia area, I got together a number of times with the Atlanta Area Space Collectors Group. It was a lot of fun, sometimes just meeting for lunch somewhere. Once we went to the Karst-onian Museum (Fred Karst's house -- he has a thread on collectSPACE with many photos depicting the growth of the Karst-onian), and once we went to the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville AL. I had a lot of fun with the group and realized when I moved to Dallas that I missed the experience and would like to see something similar here in North Texas. So, for anyone who lives within reasonable driving distance of the DFW area, I would like to see if there is interest in getting together for an initial meet up. I am a member of the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Dallas' Love Field, so I thought that might be a good central point for a meeting, but I am open to pretty much anything (among other things, the Frontiers of Flight Museum has the Apollo 7 command module). For a first get-together, we could do a show-and-tell of space memorabilia in our collections, chat about all things space, do a swap meet ... lots of options. Mostly, I would just like to see if anyone has interest and coordinate among interested parties for a date, time, and location that will work. Folks from Oklahoma, Arkansas, or others are more than welcome too, even if you think you might only attend occasionally due to the distance (and, of course, we could look at holding get-togethers anywhere [including Arkansas or Oklahoma], so ... road trip!).For anyone interested, please post below. I will gather up info for interested parties and coordinate for us to get together. I would envision us getting together maybe three to four times a year depending upon interest level. So, who's in? John CapobiancoMcKinney, Texas4allmankindJohn, I am in... and happy to assist this endeavor in any way.capoetcGlad to hear it, Jason! I will contact you offline and exchange contact info.GACspaceguyIt was always so good to see everyone. We have not gotten together since Covid hit.Robert PearlmanDallas is not too far away from Houston that a trip could not be justified... John, please me in the loop as to your plans. I might not be able to be there every time you guys get together, but would enjoy the opportunity to do so at least once should the logistics work out.KevmacWould love that! I'll come up from Aggieland. Weekends are best.Joel KatzowitzWhat great memories John. I was a card carrying member of the Atlanta Area Spacegeek Group! Our "get togethers" were always great fun. I miss that.We even had custom patches made to celebrate our identity!capoetcRobert - I will put you on the list and keep you in the loop. If we can get something going, a trip to Houston would be a great thing to do too.For kevmac and any others who might post over the weekend, I am travelling this weekend and will be in touch with all of you via email on my return.Cheers!capoetcBumping this topic up to increase visibility. So far we have: capoetc4allmankindkevmacRobert (possible occasional participant)dtempledtempleI'm within 120 miles of Dallas, so should be able to make a meeting from time to time.capoetcI will add you to the list!capoetcContact has been made via e-mail with everyone who has chimed in so far with interest in getting together, but I am betting there are more folks in the North Texas / South Oklahoma / West Arkansas area who might be willing to get together, even if they don't think they can make it every time.I will give it a little more time to try to identify others who might be interested and then will coordinate via e-mail to identify the "where" and "when" of a get together. Once we come up with the details, I will post again on cS in case anyone else wants to join in.So if you have interest, even if you think you may only be able to come once in a while, please post here and I will make contact with you and put you on the mailing list.4allmankindJohn, thanks again for spearheading the effort. Based on Robert Pearlman's reply, do you think it would increase attendance for the meet up to be somewhere equidistant between Dallas and Houston? Could we wrangle more Houston-based collectors if we were meeting in, say, College Station? Equally inconvenient for all parties, hah! KevmacCant wait!!It would be a little inconvenient for most, but not for me. I might have to drive a few miles.College Station is about 90 minutes from Austin and Houston, and 3 hours from DFW and San Antonio. Pretty central to the region. But I definitely don't mind coming up to DFW area. capoetcOnce we identify folks who have interest, I see no reason why we couldn’t move the meeting location around from meeting to meeting. That way everyone could have a local event at some point. I think it all depends on who is willing to participate and where they are located. A JSC or Ellington Field meet up makes sense. Maybe one at the Stafford Air & Space Museum.Endless possibilities. But there must be more interested folks out there ….sev8nInterested, I'm in North Oak Cliff, maybe 6 miles from the museum.capoetcAwesome! Please contact me so I can get your e-mail (not listed in your profile) so we can establish connectivity and get you on the group e-mail list. Here is the list so far: capoetc4allmankindkevmacRobert (possible occasional participant)dtemplesev8ncapoetcFor anyone in the Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas or Louisiana area who might be interested (even if you don't think you will come to every get together, all are welcome!):Please post here if you are interested in getting on the distribution list for events. Timing, frequency and location for events are TBD based upon (1) where people are located, and (2) what folks want to do. Right now we have six people identified (there must be more in the area!), but several of them have indicated they will only be able to be occasional attendees due to distance (although, I think it is more than reasonable for us to cater the locations to where folks are so that everyone gets a "home" event at least occasionally).I would like to target this Fall for an initial get together. We can take some pictures and write up something about the event to hopefully get the word out and identify more interested folks. So, even if you have only a passing interest, please let me know. No obligation. And you just might end up having a good time. mode1charlieI live in Honolulu, but I'm in Dallas semi-frequently to see my father, who lives there. So on the 5% chance that one of these meetings coincides with one of my visits, please put me on the grey list. capoetcSounds good! And don't worry, there won't be that many e-mails, just enough to coordinate events. Looking forward to meeting you when you end up being in town for an event. Here is the list so far: capoetc4allmankindkevmacRobert (possible occasional participant)dtemplesev8nmode1charlieCMD_OVRDI live in the Argyle area, so count me in!bthumbleI live north of Houston and would like to be included.capoetcE-mail sent to CMD_OVRD and bthumble. We are getting to the point where we should be able to at least get a few folks together for an initial get together, so expect to see a group e-mail from me in the next week or two to get the ball rolling! The tent is big enough for anyone with interest in the space program who would like to participate, so please post below if you would like to be included. Here is the list so far: capoetc4allmankindkevmacRobert (possible occasional participant)dtemplesev8nmode1charlieCMD_OVRDbthumbleBob MHere is a relic and souvenir of an earlier space collectors' get-together 25 years ago in Marietta, Georgia. Ten of us got together at a collector's home and discussed space collecting, made some trades and displayed some of our best material.Time marches on and most of those there and signing the cover shown above are either out of collecting or not very active. Some were very prominent in the hobby then and still are and below are the names of who were there and signed the cover.Top left to bottom: Sarah Brown (wife of Jimmy Brown)Joel Katzowitz (active)Russ Still (semi-active)Bob McLeod (active)unknownunknownChris Thompson (semi-active)Ray Cartier (active and pioneer collector) Top right: James Brown (in-active)Pat Sanders (inactive) A few of these names may be known to present-day collectors, but back in 1999 most were very prominent and well-known in the hobby.Ray Cartier brought the covers and had them canceled. The special cancel dates and gives the location of our get-together. Ten covers were signed, one for each collector (Joel, can you find your cover?).Ray thought of everything, as he used stamps showing Daffy Duck at his mailbox with covers.
