spaceman | With the 25th anniversary of the first Briton in space this month I was wondering how many more (born in Britain) have there been? - Helen Sharman
- Michael Foale
- Piers Sellers
- Nicholas Patrick
- Richard Garriott
- Timothy Peake
Anyone else who could be considered a 'Brit in Space'? |
LM-12 | Gregory H. Johnson was born in the UK according to his biography. He was the pilot on two shuttle missions, STS-123 and STS-134. |
Hart Sastrowardoyo | Hong Kong was under British rule until 1997; Bill Anders was born there although he was born to American parents. |
dcfowler1 | Tony Llewellyn was born in Wales, though he left NASA before flying. |
LM-12 | Of those mentioned above, only Helen Sharman and Timothy Peake wore the Union Jack on their flight suits. |
Robert Pearlman | Richard Garriott wore the U.S. flag on his Sokol suit, but had both the U.S. and UK flags on his flight suit. |
moorouge | I don't suppose we can claim John Bull can we? He's our equivalent of Uncle Sam. Guess if ever a Brit lands on the Moon he'll be properly dressed - |
Tykeanaut | I love the photo Eddie. |
LM-12 | Timothy Mace was the backup for Helen Sharman on Soyuz TM-12. |
DeepSea | There is also the comparatively little-known cadre of Payload Specialists who were intended to fly as part of the Skynet deployments, comprised of Christopher Holmes from the MoD, Anthony Boyle and Richard Farrimond from the British Army, Peter Longhurst from the Royal Navy, and Nigel Wood from the Royal Air Force. Of course, they never flew in the aftermath of 51-L. Challenger shuttle disaster ended pilot's dream to be first Briton in space |
dcfowler1 | There was also a payload specialist candidate from Kodak in the UK, John Padday who was going to fly, but Challenger stopped that. |
AlanLawrie | If I recall correctly it was John Padday who appeared on the BBC live coverage immediately after the Challenger explosion as he was probably the only relevant person close by at the time. I have it on DVD. |
