In the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) was enclosed in an Atlas V rocket payload fairing on Oct. 25, 2011. The fairing will protect the spacecraft from the impact of aerodynamic pressure and heating during ascent. The Atlas fairing containing the MSL spacecraft was then moved by transporter to Space Launch Complex 41 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, where it was raised and attached to the Atlas V rocket inside the Vertical Integration Facility on Nov. 3, 2011.
