Lucy in the sky: NASA launches probe to explore Trojan asteroids A NASA probe has embarked on a 12-year mission to visit a record number of small worlds, exploring for the first time a group of asteroids that may be the leftover remains from the creation of our solar system. The spacecraft, named "Lucy," launched Saturday (Oct. 16) atop a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket from Complex 41 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The 5:34 a.m. EDT (0934 GMT) liftoff began the mission's journey to the Trojans — two swarms of asteroids that lead and follow Jupiter in its orbit around the Sun.
