[i]Interviewed by the [Boston] Globe in early 1969, Mr. Hoag described his job simply as "keeping the project together." After he and his team spent years creating and reworking the guidance system, astronauts first landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Mr. Hoag marveled at the amazing ingenuity of all those involved in the historic achievement. "In an incredible and audacious task, the landing of men on the moon, the guidance equipment for the mission was created out of primitive principles, prolific imagination, and a lot of hard work," he wrote in the 1976 report.[/i]
